Finding the Right Service Providers
One of the great advantages of the NDIS is the control it grants you over the supports you receive. This flexibility allows you to choose your own providers, tailoring your care to fit your specific needs.
However, this level of personalisation can be overwhelming for some. You’re not alone in feeling this way. To help you on your NDIS journey, here are 4 effective strategies for finding the best service providers for your situation.
1. Support Coordination
Support coordination can be an incredibly beneficial for many people. A support coordinator is a professional who helps you find and connect with local service providers that best meet your needs.
The NDIS may include funding for support coordination in your plan, but it’s important to note that not everyone is eligible for this service. Support coordination is considered a ‘capacity building’ support, meaning it’s intended to help you build the skills to manage your supports independently in the future. If you think you might benefit from support coordination, discuss this option at your next planning meeting.
If you don’t receive funding for support coordination, don’t worry – there are other resources available to assist you.
2. Consult your Local Area Coordinator (LAC)
If your plan doesn’t include support coordination, your LAC is a valuable resource. Your LAC can provide you with a list of service providers in your area, helping you get started with your plan.
3. Utilise Online Directories
The NDIS Portal offers lists of service providers, but navigating through thousands of options can be daunting. Fortunately, there are websites that can simplify this process. Directories like Clickability and MyCareSpace offer overviews of each service provider, along with rating and customer reviews. These platforms allow for you to see how others have experienced the services, and you can even leave your own reviews to help others make informed decisions.
4. Organise Your Own Support Team
Some people prefer to directly hire their own support workers rather than going through a service provider. There are several websites that allow you to browse profiles of support workers and choose the one that best fits your needs. This approach provides an additional level of choice and control, which can be empowering for many individuals.
Additional Tips and Considerations
· Unregistered Providers: Don’t overlook unregistered providers. Many passionate and skilled service providers choose not to register with the NDIS. If your funding is NDIS-managed, you can’t access these providers. However, if you have plan management or self-manage your funds, you can utilise these unregistered providers. All NDIS participants are eligible for plan management, so consider asking for this option during your planning meeting.
Service Agreements: Establish service agreements with your providers. These agreements should detail when and how the support will be provided, as well as any costs and fees involved. Ensure you are satisfied with the terms before signing to protect both yourself and the service provider in case of any disputes.
Seek Advice: Finding the right supports can be challenging, so don’t hesitate to ask for advice.
By following these strategies and tips, you can make the most of your NDIS journey and find the best service providers to meet your unique needs.
