NDIS Supports Changes: NDIS Update 3 October 2024

Starting 3 October 2024, the NDIS has introduced some important updates to the definition of what can and cannot be funded through NDIS supports. These changes are aimed at clarifying how NDIS funding can be used, and they may affect the services and supports you currently receive. We’re sending you this information to ensure you understand these updates and how they may impact your claims and service agreements.

What’s Changing?

From 3 October, participants, along with their authorised representatives, should be aware of the following updates:

  • NDIS funding can only be spent on items listed in the approved NDIS supports list

  • Funding cannot be used for items listed as non-NDIS supports

You can review these updated lists online to see what is included and excluded: Approved NDIS Supports List

What Does This Mean for You?

These updates apply to all NDIS participants. To make sure your current supports are in line with the new guidelines, here’s what you should do:

  • Talk to us: We can help you understand how these changes may affect your existing service agreements and supports

  • Connect with your providers: We’re here to guide you through these updates and ensure your services comply with the new rules. We’ll continue to share more information as it becomes available.

It’s important for you to take the time, alongside your family and carers, to understand these changes so that your access to the supports you need isn’t interrupted.

Transition Period and Support

We understand that adjustments may take some time. If NDIS funding is mistakenly used for an item not on the approved list during this transition period, we’ll work with you to clarify the new rules. While the majority of participants and providers act responsibly, please note that repeated misuse or fraudulent claims may require further action.

Our main priority is your wellbeing, and we’re here to help you navigate these changes. The updated lists are not meant to complicate things but to ensure clarity around what supports are eligible for funding.

Substitution or Replacement Supports

There may be instances where a non-NDIS support is a better fit for your needs. NDIS allows for the option to request certain replacement supports, but there are guidelines to follow:

  • Replacement supports must come from a pre-approved list of non-NDIS supports

  • You need to demonstrate that the replacement support will provide that same or better outcomes compared to your current NDIS support

  • Approval must be obtained before making any purchases for replacement supports

The list of replacement supports is available alongside the NDIS supports list on the official NDIS website. We’re happy to discuss these options with you and help determine whether a replacement support is the best fit for your needs. If you choose not to pursue replacement supports, you may opt to fund them privately.

Moving Forward

These updates are designed to provide greater clarity around how NDIS funding is used, ensuring participants get the most out of their supports. We’re here to assist you in understanding these changes and ensuring that you continue to receive the services you need. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to us – we’re here to help.

We look forward to supporting you through these updates and helping you achieve your goals with NDIS.
