Understanding NDIS Support Coordination: Answering Your FAQs

Over the years, we’ve encountered numerous myths and misconceptions about NDIS support coordination. Today, we will clarify what a support coordinator is, their role, how to obtain funding for support coordination in your plan, and more.

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about support coordination:

1.        Do you need to be eligible for support coordination funding?

Yes, to receive funding for support coordination in your NDIS plan, you must meet specific eligibility criteria.

2.        Does the amount of support coordination funding depend on the type of disability?

No. The NDIS considers various factors when assessing your need for support coordination funding. While the type of disability is considered, the NDIS also evaluates your informal support network, including friends and family who assist you in navigating the NDIS.

3.        Can I get support coordination even if I have a lot of informal supports?

Yes. Even with a large support network, it may not be practical or reasonable for them to help you navigate the NDIS. The NDIS will consider this when evaluating your request for support coordination.

4.        Can I have both plan management and support coordination?

Yes. These are distinct services, and you can include both support coordination and plan management in your NDIS plan. Plan management focuses on managing your NDIS plan’s funding, while a support coordinator helps you find and connect with service providers and understand your plan.

5.        Is there a limit on how long I can have support coordination?

No. As long as you meet the eligibility criteria, there is no limit on how many times you can include support coordination in your NDIS plan. When requesting support coordination, provide ample evidence (eg. A letter from a GP or an occupational therapist report) to demonstrate its benefits to the NDIS.

6.        Will my support coordinator handle everything for me?

No. You maintain control over your NDIS journey, including service service delivery and scheduling. A support coordinator helps you build skills and confidence to eventually coordinate your supports independently or with the help of your informal support network.

7.        Is my support coordination budget only for face-to-face meetings with my support coordinator?

No. Face-to-face or virtual meetings are just a part of what support coordinator do. Much of their work happens behind the scenes, including researching solutions, contacting service providers, reporting to the NDIS, answering questions, and handling administrative tasks to maximise your plan’s benefits.

8.        Can I contact my support coordinator in an emergency?

No. In an emergency or crisis, always contact the appropriate emergency services. Your support coordinator can assist with service provider issues, but they are not responsible for emergency interventions.
