Understanding NDIS Funding for Alternative Therapies

The NDIS pays for many types of therapy that have strong proof showing they work well. These include services like speech therapy, psychology, art and music therapy, and nutrition advice.

There's also a group called Alternative Therapies, which includes things like acupuncture, natural medicine, chiropractic care, osteopathy, homeopathy, yoga and Pilates, and massage therapy. Usually, the NDIS doesn't pay for these because there isn't enough evidence that they always work.

But the NDIS knows that everyone is different, and what helps one person might not help another. So, sometimes, the NDIS might agree to pay for alternative therapies if there's a special reason.

If you want the NDIS to consider paying for alternative therapies, you need to mention them when you talk about your plan. You should also talk to your NDIS planner or contact person about these therapies. A letter from your occupational therapist or another professional can also help. This letter proves the therapy is good for you and can help you get approval during meetings to review your plan.

However, remember that the NDIS will only pay for therapies that directly help you manage or improve your disability.

Knowing these details helps you make better choices about what support to ask for from the NDIS and argue for therapies that really improve your life.
