Making the Most of Your Capacity Building Supports
Do you have Capacity Building Supports funding through the NDIS and are unsure how to effectively utilise it to enhance your independent living? If so, you're in the right place! Although not as flexible as the Core Supports component, your Capacity Building Supports budget is crucial in helping you achieve your aspirations.
What are Capacity Building Supports
The NDIS provides various supports to help participants build their skills and independence in daily life. These supports, known as capacity building supports, focus on enabling participants to achieve their goals, become more independent, and increase their participation in the community. Here are some categories for the Capacity Building Supports:
Improved Daily Living: This support includes therapeutic services provided by allied health professionals to improve skills for daily living and independence.
Increased Social and Community Participation: Supports in this category help participants engage more actively in their community, social activities, and recreational pursuits.
Finding and Keeping a Job: This includes supports that assist participants in obtaining and retaining employment, such as workplace skills training and job coaching
Relationships: Supports aimed at helping participants develop positive social interactions and manage relationships more effectively.
Health and Wellbeing: Focuses on improving the participant’s health and fitness, which can involve exercise programs or nutrition planning, tailored to their individual needs.
Lifelong Learning: Supports that help participants gain new skills and knowledge through educational programs and personal development.
Behaviour Support: This includes specialised interventions designed to manage and reduce behaviours of concern and develop positive behaviours, often involving behaviour support plans crafted by skilled practitioners.
What Can You Achieve with Capacity Building Supports?
This funding category can support a variety of activities and tools, including:
Community and Recreational Activities: Whether it’s funding for camps, horse riding, or even soccer lessons, these activities fall under the Increased Social & Community Participation category, helping you engage more with your community.
Educational and Developmental Programs: From art programs to technology aids like tablets, these supports facilitate participation in a range of developmental activities that align with your goals.
Therapeutic Interventions: This can cover both traditional therapies like occupational therapy and less conventional ones such as music or art therapy, depending on what best supports your growth.
Planning and Approval Process
To ensure these supports are included in your NDIS plan, discuss them with your NDIA planner or Local Area Coordinator. Remember, each support must relate to your disability and fit the NDIA’s criteria of being reasonable and necessary.
Your Capacity Building Supports can also extend to areas such as:
Health and Wellbeing: Supports like diet planning with a dietitian or fitness training to enhance physical health.
Employment Assistance: From resume writing to job application support, if finding and keeping a job is part of your goals, this funding can help.
Educational Support: If you're pursuing studies, educational support might include assistance with study skills or access to educational settings.
Family and Carer Training: Training for those who support you in understanding specific needs or enhancing communication.
Navigating Complex Needs
For those with complex needs, such as behaviours that require detailed support plans or high-level medical needs, we guide and support you through the process of securing the necessary services and interventions.
